ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the first four singles matches off court after dropping the doubles point, picking up its 10th straight win in a 4-1 victory over Purdue on Sunday afternoon (March 31) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Purdue took the early lead by winning the doubles point, getting a win at No. 1 and a tiebreak win at No. 2 after Michigan won a 6-1 match at No. 3.
With the Wolverines needing to win four singles matches, U-M took control quickly by winning five first sets.
On the even-numbered side of the VTC, it was a race to put the first point on the board as Gala Mesochoritou, Lily Jones and Reese Miller were all up multiple breaks in their respective second sets.
Mesochoritou pulled the Wolverines level at 1-1 in the team match behind a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2. She got the break she needed at 2-1 in the first set and consolidated the break in the ensuing game. Mesochoritou dropped just one more game the rest of the way in her fifth straight singles win.
Jones followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4, giving Michigan its first lead of the day at 2-1. She picked up her 20th singles win of the season by jumping out to 4-1 leads in both sets en route to the straight-set win.
Miller, who held a concurrent match point with Mesochoritou a few minutes earlier, put Michigan on the brink of victory behind a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 6. She broke on a deuce point for a 3-1 lead in the first set, igniting a run of three more games to get the win. In the second, she raced out to a 5-2 lead before Purdue's Ashlie Wilson answered with two straight games. Miller was able to serve it out during her second opportunity, giving Michigan a 3-1 lead.
Piper Charney did the honors for Maize and Blue, putting the fourth point on the board behind a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5. She was down a break at 4-2 in the first set before converting on the deuce point with a drop shot to get back on serve. It was all Charney from there as she wrapped up a 6-4 win. In the second set, she grabbed a 2-0 lead before Tara Katarina Milic countered with two straight games. It was then Charney's turn to answer, winning the next four games for Michigan's fourth point.
U-M hits the road for one match next weekend, heading to East Lansing to face Michigan State on Saturday (April 6) at 4 p.m.
