Amene, McFarland Win Conference Titles, U-M Finshes Fourth at B1G Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Dubem Amene and Trent McFarland of the University of Michigan men's track and field team earned their first career Big Ten Outdoor titles and the Wolverines finished fourth with 72 points on the final day of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Sunday (May 12) at U-M Track and Field Stadium.
Michigan fell six points shy of third-place Wisconsin (78 points). Nebraska claimed the team title with 136 points.
The Maize and Blue went 1-2 in the 1,500-meter run, with McFarland (3:43.59) edging out Nick Foster (3:43.64) over the final 50 meters for the win. Henry Johnson also earned a podium finish, running 3:46.61 for seventh. U-M picked up 20 points in the event.
Amene was the second Wolverine of the day to win gold, running 45.92 seconds in the 400-meter dash. Amene was 0.65 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
Miles Brown earned the Wolverines one point in the 800-meter run, finishing eighth with a time of 1:49.40.
Luke Venhuizen earned a silver-medal finish in the 5,000-meter run, coming in second in a time of 13:58.27 and Ian Hill finished fifth with a personal-best time of 14:11.41. The pair earned 12 team points.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Benny Diaz, Jacob Koerner, Dante Bassham and Amit Rutman finished seventh (41.29) while the 4x400-meter relay team of Lawrence Gilliam, Brown, Koerner and Amene finished fifth with a season-best time of 3:08.05.
Berachiah Ajala finished eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 15.67m (51 feet, 5 inches) and Tianhao Wei finished 10th with a mark of 15.28m (50-1.75). Both marks were personal bests, but Ajala's was not wind legal.
McFarland, Amene, and Tom Brady were named First Team All-Big Ten, while Foster and Venhuizen were named Second Team All-Big Ten. Wei earned the B1G Sportsmanship Award.
The Wolverines will continue postseason competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Lexington, Ky., from Wednesday through Saturday, May 22-25. The NCAA will announce preliminary-round selections on Thursday (May 16).
