BETHEL, Ohio -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan rowing program raced well and posted fast times but settled for three Petite Final bids on Saturday's (June 1) second day of the NCAA Championships on Harsha Lake at East Fork State Park. The Wolverines placed fourth across three A/B semifinals (first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four), narrowly missing the top-three finishes needed for national championship bids.
Temperatures were in the low to mid 60's some light cloud coverage. Starts were moved up to accommodate the possibility of storms later in the morning and early afternoon.
The Wolverines rowed out of the fifth lane between Texas and Washington in the first varsity eight event, which provided U-M the chance to see the fastest pace early, as Texas and Tennessee were the first leaders. Past 500 meters, that pair and Washington formed the top three with U-M in fourth, a half-deck down from the Huskies.
Texas led Tennessee by a half-length and Washington tried to move a few seats up to even with the Volunteers. Hanging onto the second- and third-place boats, the Wolverines looked smooth approaching 1,000 meters. Washington made a move into Tennessee and drew to just a few seats down, and U-M used that speed to generate its own, keeping contact with both boats.
Approaching the final 500, Texas had nearly put open water on second-place Tennessee, which again stretched its lead over Washington. Michigan was chasing U-W but found itself nearly a deck behind. U-M's move over the final sprint pushed them into Washington, and the Wolverines seemingly gained ground with each stroke. The Huskies' final charge was enough to keep them in third and the Wolverines had to settle for fourth place, 2.176 seconds behind Washington.
U-M will race out of the fourth lane in the Petite Final Sunday morning (June 2) at 9:20Â a.m. against Syracuse, Yale, California, Pennsylvania and Ohio State.
In the second varsity eight race, U-M raced out of lane one next to Ohio State. Stanford was the first leader out of the third lane and Tennessee and Texas settled into second and third place in the early going, with U-M fourth, as the crews approached 500 meters.
The Volunteers and Longhorns continued to fight for second place with Tennessee establishing a lead of several seats while the Wolverines kept contact with the Longhorns at 1,000 meters. As the second half of the race began, Texas started to walk through Tennessee and moved into second place. U-M pushed with a move of its own and kept contact with Texas, but after a few more strokes, it was clear the Wolverines would be chasing Tennessee for third. Texas developed a half-deck lead on the Volunteers and as the boats approached the sprint, U-M made another move in its bid for a top-three finish. But over the final few hundred meters, Tennessee surged again, taking a few more seats from Texas and leaving the Wolverines in fourth.
Michigan will line up in lane four against Pennsylvania, Ohio State, California, Brown and Virginia in tomorrow's Petite Final (9:04 a.m.).
The first varsity four race was a very tight field from the start. U-M, Princeton and Tennessee had the quickest starts with the Wolverines impressing through 500 meters among the first co-leaders.
Stanford and Tennessee battled with Michigan as the top three boats and Princeton hung on for fourth with open water on the rest of the pack. Stanford emerged as the leader with Tennessee in second, and U-M had about a two-seat lead on Princeton for third place as the boats approached 1,000 meters.
The Tigers' pace picked up in the third 500 and they moved through U-M and Tennessee and into second position. The Wolverines continued to compete, trading seats with Tennessee in an incredibly tight race for third. Over the final 250, the Volunteers sprinted ahead U-M could not find the final move it needed to retake third place.
The four will be the first U-M boat in action during tomorrow morning's Petite Final action at 8:48Â a.m., racing out of the third lane against Syracuse, Rutgers, Cal, Brown and Pennsylvania.
