DUNCAN, Canada -- Rowing Canada Aviron, the Canadian Olympic Committee, and the Canadian Paralympic Committee announced the roster of Team Canada rowing athletes nominated to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, and Abigail Dent of the University of Michigan Rowing program was named to the Canadian 8+ lineup.
Dent has spent the 2023-24 season training in her home country for the opportunity to make Team Canada's lineup for Paris. She will row in a boat seeking to defend its gold medal from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics; four athletes from that 2020 lineup are returning to compete in Paris.
Dent is expected to rejoin the U-M program in fall 2024 after returning from Olympic competition.
A two-time Pocock/CRCA All-American (second team, 2023) and the 2023 Big Ten Athlete of the Year, Dent has been a key piece of the U-M varsity eight lineup since her arrival on campus. The Kenora, Ontario, native won gold medals at the Big Ten Championships with the U-M 2V8 (2021) and 1V8 (2023), helping the Wolverines to team titles in both seasons.
Dent has rowed for Team Canada twice at the U-23 World Championships level (2021-22) in double sculls (BW2x) and the 8+. She is also Michigan's program record-holder on the erg.
Dent is the 10th athlete in program history to compete in an Olympic Games. She is the third Canadian to represent her country in the Olympics, joining Janine Hanson (2008, '12) and Heather Mandoli (2008). Dent also joins the likes of Americans Amanda Elmore (2016), Kate Johnson (2004), Kate MacKenzie (2004), Felice Mueller (2016), Brett Sickler (2008), Ellen Tomek (2008, 2016, 2021) and Sarah Trowbridge (2012) as Wolverine alumnae to be Olympic competitors.
Rowing events begin in Paris on July 27 and run through Aug. 3.
