LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Michael Hage of the University of Michigan ice hockey team was selected by the Montreal Canadiens with the 21st overall pick in the first round of the 2024 NHL Draft on Friday night (June 28).
Hage spent the last two seasons with the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League. A first-team All-USHL selection, he finished fourth in the league in scoring this season with 75 points in 54 games, scoring 33 goals and 42 assists. He tallied 24 multiple-point games last season with a career best five-point game against Madison.
At the NHL Draft Combine, Hage finished in the top 20 in several physical fitness tests including pro agility and consecutive pull-ups.
In his first practice with Chicago in 2022, Hage suffered an upper-body injury that forced him to miss six months of the 2022-23 season. He made his USHL debut on March 10 and had five goals and five assists in the final 13 games before helping the Steel to the finals of the Clarke Cup.
A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Hage will begin his freshman year at Michigan in the fall.
He is the 34th first-round selection for the Wolverines, as the program continues to lead all universities with the most first-round selections all time. In the last five years alone, Michigan leads the way with 25 first-round selections.
Hage was honored on Thursday night at the NHL Awards as this year's recipient of the E.J. McGuire Award of Excellence. First award in 2015, it is presented annually by the NHL to a candidate who best exemplifies commitment to excellence through strength of character, competitiveness and athleticism.Â
Rounds 2-7 will be held on Saturday (June 29) beginning at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN+ and the NHL Network.
