Pair of Wolverines Advance to NCAA Championships Finals on Record-Breaking Day

EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team opened the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a bang on Thursday (June 6), setting three records and advancing two Wolverines to Saturday's finals.
Emma Yungeberg continued her breakout sophomore season, earning her first trip to the NCAA Championships in the javelin throw behind two straight record-setting performances in the postseason. Yungeberg opened the day with a throw of 45.99 meters (150 feet, 10 inches) on her first attempt before improving to 50.50m (165-8) in her second. Her final throw was good for a new U-M standard at 52.36m (171-9) and a 14th place finish. Yungeberg earned second team All-America honors for the performance.
Reigning NCAA 400-meter hurdles champion Savannah Sutherland will get a chance to defend her title after advancing to Saturday's finals, posting a personal-best time of 54.04 seconds in the semifinals. Sutherland finished first in her heat and second overall while setting both the Canadian and program standards for the event.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Aasia Laurencin finished first in her heat and eighth overall with a time of 12.77 to advance to the finals on Saturday.
The Wolverines will close out the 2024 season on the final day of the NCAA Championships, Saturday (June 8) at Hayward Field. In addition to Sutherland and Laurencin, Corinne Jemison (discus throw) and Riley Ammenhauser (triple jump) will compete. Field action will begin with the discus throw at 2:05 p.m. PDT and track action starts with the 100-meter hurdles at 3:12 p.m. PDT.
