LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the fifth straight year, the organization announced Wednesday (July 17).
Michigan received the award for the first time following the 2019-20 season. The award was instituted in the 1992-93 academic year honor volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale. A total of 228 Division I women's programs earned the award this year.
"At the University of Michigan, we believe that the holistic development of student-athletes is critical to their success as alumni and professionals," said head coach Erin Virtue. "Within the Michigan Volleyball program, we love to see our student-athletes succeed in the classroom, on the court, as well as in their personal lives. The Michigan degree is such a difference-maker and we want to make sure our student-athletes are getting the most out of their education here to prepare them for life after volleyball."
The Wolverines placed nine student-athletes on the Fall Academic All-Big Ten list, including Allison Jacobs, who maintained a perfect GPA. Three members of the team also received Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors for recording a GPA above 3.7 for the school year this spring. Brooke Humphrey, Maddi Cuchran and Serena Nyambio were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team after meeting athletic and academic requirements.
