
Andrews, Australia Earn Silver Medals in Paris

PARIS, France -- Former University of Michigan water polo student-athlete Abby Andrews and Australia fell 11-9 to Spain on Saturday (Aug. 10) inside Paris La Defense Arena in the gold medal game to earn the silver medal.
Andrews earned U-M's third silver medal, and ninth overall, at the 2024 Paris Games.
Andrews scored in the third period to giver her at least one tally in every match the Stingers played in Paris. She was one of two Australians to score double-digit goals in the tournament, tallying 13 goals in seven matches. In the three knockout matches, Andrews scored seven goals including a team-high four in the semifinal win over the U.S.
Andrews' lone goal came with 6:30 remaining in the third as she found the back of the net on the extra-player advantage to cut Spain's lead to 5-3. Australia continued to battle, inching to within one goal, but Spain held firm and took gold with.
Saturday marks the first time Australia has captured silver in water polo at the Olympics after taking gold in 2000 and bronze in 2008 and 2012. Australia reached the Olympic final for the first time since 2000.
Andrews adds an Olympic medal to a strong collegiate career that saw her propel the Wolverines to a CWPA title and the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. She hols the program records for being the fastest to 50 goals (29 games) and 50 assists (25 games) in her one season in Ann Arbor.
