PARIS, France -- For his swim in the mixed 4x100-meter relay preliminary round on Friday (Aug. 2), University of Michigan alumnus Charlie Swanson earned gold, the first Olympic medal of his career on Saturday (Aug. 3) at the 2024 Olympic Games.
A breaststroke specialist, Swanson clocked a split of 59.65 seconds as the Americans posted the top time in qualifying with a mark of 3:40.98 on Friday. In Saturday's final, the quartet of Ryan Murphy (backstroke), Nic Fink (breaststroke), Gretchen Walsh (butterfly) and Torri Huske (freestyle) combined to clock a world record time of 3:37.43 to outlast China and take gold in just the second iteration of the event at the Olympics.
Swanson becomes the first Wolverine men's swimmer to earn a medal at the Olympics since Connor Jaeger earned silver in the 1,500-meter freestyle in Rio in 2016. Swanson's gold marks the 80th Olympic medal in Michigan men's swimming and diving history.
Swanson is in line for another medal in Paris after helping the American men earn a place in Sunday's (Aug. 4) 4x100-meter medley relay with another strong breaststroke swim.
