
O’Reilly, McFarland Post Top-Eight Finishes at World U20 Championships

LIMA, Peru -- Three members of the University of Michigan track and field program competed at the 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships from Aug. 27-31, with Trent McFarland and John O'Reilly's top-eight finishes leading the effort.
O'Reilly finished second in his heat and sixth overall in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:49.92 to automatically advance to the semifinals. The Toronto, Canada native posted a personal best time of 1:47.67 in the semifinals to advance to the finals where he posted another personal best time, going 1:47.15.
Sitting in eighth place with 200 meters to go, O'Reilly surged to finish fourth with the sixth-best all-time Canadian U20 time. The mark is 0.49 seconds faster than head coach Kevin Sullivan's No. 8 U20 all-time mark of 1:47.64.
McFarland ran 3:46.17 in the 1,500-meter heats, winning his heat to qualify for the finals automatically. The Utica, Mich. native earned a seventh-place finish in the finals with a time of 3:44.32.
Incoming freshman Stephanie Bertram also competed, representing Canada in the 800-meter run. Bertram finished fifth in her heat (2:12.13) and did not advance to the semifinals.
