ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In their opening match of the Michigan Invitational, the University of Michigan volleyball team swept Sacramento State 25-13, 25-16, 25-21 on Thursday evening (Sept. 12) at Crisler Center to improve to 7-0 on the season.
Michigan was led offensively by Allison Jacobs, who tallied a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Morgan Burke tallied 33 assists in the match and helped the Wolverines to a .340 hitting percentage. Serena Nyambio had nine kills on 11 attacks with no errors for an .818 attack percentage, while fellow middle Jacque Boney tallied five blocks in the match.
The Wolverines opened the first set with a kill from Valentina Vaulet, but Sacramento State (4-4) tied the match at one after a Michigan service error. Vaulet then tallied a block and another kill to put Michigan up 3-1 and U-M followed with a 7-2 run to take a 10-3 lead early in the set. After a Hornets timeout, the teams split the next six points before a 4-0 Michigan run forced another timeout. Ella Demetrician bookended the timeout with kills and a block from Burke and Boney put the Wolverines up 20-8. Michigan and Sacramento State traded the final 10 points to lift U-M to a 25-13 first-set win.
In the second set, U-M took the first two points after a kill from Jacobs and a Hornets attack error, but Sacramento State tied the match at two. Like the first set, Michigan took control of the second using runs from Jacobs, Trixie McMillin and Vaulet at the line to take an 11-6 lead. Vaulet tallied two aces in the stretch with Demetrician tallying two kills and a block with Boney. Out of a Sacramento State timeout, U-M went on a 6-4 run led by Demetrician and Maddi Cuchran from the service line. The run forced another Hornets timeout with U-M ahead 17-10. Michigan took the eight points it needed to win the set with two kills from Jacobs, a kill from Nyambio and a block assist by Ellie White and Boney to win the second set 25-16.
The third set was a closer affair. Tied at one apiece, a long service run by Burke -- which included an ace -- put the Wolverines ahead 4-1. U-M extended the lead to 7-3, but the Hornets responded and tied the match at seven. U-M took a 10-7 lead behind a 3-0 run capped by a Vaulet ace. Michigan could not pull away, with only two 3-0 runs providing points causing head coach Erin Virtue to call a timeout with the Wolverines leading 17-15. Out of the timeout, Sacramento State tied the match at 17, but a 3-0 run put Michigan in front 20-17 and forced a Hornets timeout. Sacramento State took four of the next five points to tie the match at 21. After a service error by the Hornets, Cuchran went to the service line and the Wolverines took the final three points of the match on a Jacobs kill, Hornets error and a Burke kill to seal the 25-21 set win and the sweep.
Michigan will return to action on Friday (Sept. 13) night, hosting Akron at Cliff Keen Arena for day two of the Michigan Invitational. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the match will be streamed live on B1G+.
