EAST LANSING, Mich. -- With career-best performances and top-10 finishes from redshirt sophomore Mara Janess and junior Sydney Sung, the University of Michigan women's golf team used a closing 298 team total today (Monday, Sept. 23) to tie for sixth with an 887 54-hole total at the Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers, West Course.
Posting her first career top-10 individual finish, Janess opened Michigan State's home event with an even-par 72, as three birdies erased three bogeys. Despite rain wreaking havoc in the second round, Janess used four birdies to card a career-best-tying 71 (-1) — the second sub-par total of her career. With her 143 (-1) total, she was tied for seventh heading into the final round.
Adding two more birdies for a team-best-tying nine total, she closed with a 73 and stayed tied for seventh as she posted a career-low 216 (E) total — a new best by nine shots. In fact, before her play in East Lansing, Janess had not finished better than 30th in an event.
Following Janess' lead, Sung used a team-best-tying nine birdies of her own to etch a new career-low 218 (+2) total and crack the top 10 as she tied for ninth. Rounding out U-M's top three was freshman Suzie Tran, who posted a 224 (74-76-74) and tied for 31st. Playing as an individual, junior Lauren Sung earned a tie for 20th finish after posting a 221 (74-75-72) total.
Off until mid-October, the Wolverines trek back to Chapel Hill, N.C., Friday through Sunday (Oct. 11-13) for North Carolina's Ruth's Chris Invitational. The three-day, 54-hole event returns to the Finley Golf Course after it underwent a renovation over the last two years. Playing at the Governors Club last year, U-M posted a sixth-place finish.
