MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's cross country team ran to a 19th place finish at the Nuttycombe Invitational hosted by Wisconsin on Friday (Sept. 27) at the Zimmer Championship Course.
Haley Deighan led the Maize and Blue contingent at the 4k mark in the first race of the day, sitting in 15th place ahead of Natalie VanOtteren (16th) and Leah Hill (17th). VanOtteren was the first Wolverine to cross the finish line, placing 11th with a time of 21:41.4. Deighan finished 20th (21:51.9) and Hill finished 30th (22:14.4).
In the championship race, Mary Caroline Heinen led the team throughout. Starting in 112th after two kilometers, Heinen moved up 29 places to 83rd at the 4K mark. Penelopea Gordon and Brooke Johnston also saw movement between the second and fourth kilometers, with Gordon moving up 25 places to 89th and Johnston moving up 28 places to 114th.
Heinen earned U-M's best finish, 55th with a time of 21:02.3. Gordon and Johnston were the next to cross the finish line, as Gordon placed 76th with a time of 21:14.7 to come just 0.70 seconds from her personal best, and Johnston placed 91st (21:22.4).
The Wolverines will get a break before its next meet, returning to Madison for the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals on Oct. 19.
