ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team led 1-0 at the half but gave up a pair of second-half goals in a 2-1 loss to No. 11-ranked Ohio State on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 29) in front of 2,137 fans at U-M Soccer Stadium. The crowd was the fifth-largest in program history.
Michigan (2-9-1, 1-4-0 Big Ten) struck first, taking the lead in the 13th minute behind a Taylor Brennan goal. Kali Burrell fed Campbell Jewell on the left side, who served a ball into the box that Brennan put home for her second goal of the season.
Ohio State (8-1-3, 3-0-2 Big Ten) totaled four shots in the first half but put none of them on goal, while Michigan got two shots off with Brennan accounting for the lone goal during the first 45 minutes of play.
The Buckeyes found the equalizer in the 62nd minute, scoring off a shot from the top of the box that U-M goalkeeper Stephanie Sparkowski got a hand on and hit the post before crossing the line for a 1-1 score.
Ohio State continued to pressure the U-M defense, which held strong until the 86th minute. Much like the first goal, OSU made a spectacular individual effort at the top of the box for the goal. Kailyn Dudukovich spun around and fired a ball at goal, putting Ohio State ahead 2-1 with just over four minutes to go.
Michigan could not answer down the stretch, dropping the 2-1 contest. It was a tale of two halves as OSU put 10 shots up in the second half, including seven on goal, to Michigan's three total in the second 45 minutes.
Michigan will hit the road next weekend, heading to East Lansing to face Michigan State on Saturday (Oct. 5) at 7 p.m.
