First-Half Surge Seals Michigan Win over Washington

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team used a 14-0 run in the first quarter to take control of the game with its lead never dipping below double digits the rest of the way in an 82-69 win over Washington on Wednesday night (Jan. 15) at Crisler Center.
Jordan Hobbs tied a career high with 22 points in her 100th career game, becoming the 50th Wolverine to reach the century mark. She also chipped in four rebounds and three assists. Olivia Olson had 18 points, five rebounds and three assists, with Yulia Grabovskaia joining them in double figures with 10 points. Syla Swords had seven points, a game-high eight rebounds, two assists and a steal, as 10 Wolverines found the scoring column. U-M (12-5, 3-3 Big Ten) held a 35-29 advantage on the glass and scored 19 second-chance points to just four for the Huskies.
Washington (12-6, 3-3 Big Ten) opened the scoring and held a 4-3 lead before Michigan unleashed a 14-0 run for a 17-4 lead off a Hobbs triple with just under four minutes remaining in the first quarter. The run featured eight points from Hobbs, a Swords triple and free throws from Mila Holloway and Olson.
Michigan's run extended to 16-3, giving the home team a 19-7 lead after 10 minutes behind 10 first-quarter points from Hobbs.
Back-to-back triples from Hobbs and Olson pushed the Michigan lead to 25-9, forcing a Washington timeout with 7:26 left before the half. Washington scored six of the next seven points before Holloway found Olson for a corner triple to beat the shot clock for a 29-15 advantage with just over five minutes remaining. The pace picked up from there as U-M headed to the locker room with a 36-26 halftime lead.
The teams went back-and-forth over the opening minutes of the third quarter before a Holloway three-point play resulted in a 50-35 U-M lead at the 5:39 mark of the third quarter. After Swords converted a jumper on the left block, Washington called timeout as Michigan's lead swelled back to 17, 54-37.
Washington kept hanging around, scoring the next five points to trim the Michigan lead to 12. Grabovskaia answered with a layup and Olson followed with a short jumper as U-M regained a 58-42 lead.
Michigan led by as many as 20 points in the final quarter, getting six points each from Olson and Te'Yala Delfosse in the stanza as U-M recorded its second straight win to get back to .500 in conference play.
The Wolverines will complete a two-game homestand on Saturday (Jan. 18), hosting Rutgers at noon.
