
Michigan Earns Two Event Titles, but Falls at No. 6 Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team opened up its 2025 Big Ten Conference season with a season-high score of 196.975 on Friday (Jan. 17) at the Breslin Center, but ultimately fell to No. 6 Michigan State, which recorded a 197.500.
Freshman Sophia Diaz took home her second straight title, tying with teammate Carly Bauman to win the uneven bars title in the first rotation of the evening. Freshman Jahzara Ranger earned her third career title in as many weeks and her second career balance beam win, tying a career-best 9.900. Senior Jacey Vore shared the title with Ranger and stuck two landings for the Maize and Blue (3-2, 0-1 Big Ten).
Sophomore Ava Jordan notched two career highs and placed third on the vault with a 9.875, while Kayli Boozer scored a 9.875 on floor exercise for a career best and had a solid performance on the beam with a 9.850.
The Wolverines came out firing on the uneven bars, sticking three routines and recording a season-high 49.275 behind 9.900s from Bauman and Diaz to win the event. Sophomore Jordan continued to impress as she tied a career-best 9.825, Vore stuck her landing to record a 9.850 and Sophie Parenti stuck her landing to lead off the meet.
Michigan put together its best vault rotation of the season starting with Jordan, who recorded a career-best 9.875 to place third overall and Ranger followed it up with a career-best 9.850. Jenna Mulligan and Paige Thaxton scored matching 9.825s as U-M went into the halfway point with a running score of 98.450, trailing the Spartans' 98.675 through two full rotations.
The improvement continued into the third rotation for the Maize and Blue. Parenti led off with a 9.800 and Boozer scored a career-high 9.875 it the spot of the rotation. Bauman notched her second 9.900 of the evening and Michigan headed to the final rotation trailing MSU 148.000-147.600.
Parenti led off the beam rotation with a 9.850 and Boozer matched it in the second spot. Vore stuck her second landing of the evening for a 9.900 and Ranger tied a career-best 9.900 to follow as both tied for the event victory. Bauman closed out the rotation with a 9.875, but it was not enough.
U-M continues its road slate when it heads to Seattle, Wash., next Saturday (Jan. 25) for an 8 p.m. PST meet against Washington. The meet will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
