MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team dropped its road weekend finale, falling to No. 8 Minnesota, 25-10, on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 19) at the Golden Gophers' Maturi Pavilion.
The Wolverines claimed three bouts, including upset wins from freshmen at 149 and 165 pounds and a top-10 decision at 197. Michigan dropped five of its seven losses by just one score -- three points or less -- while four of those came against top-10 opponents.
Sophomore/freshman Dylan Gilcher earned his second win of the weekend with an 11-3 major decision over Minnesota's 19th-ranked Drew Roberts at 149 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Gilcher finished on a late low single and, after a restart for blood in the final 10 seconds, put Roberts to his back for three back points. They traded takedowns in the third, with Gilcher scoring out of a scramble and earning an escape with 30 seconds left to secure the bonus point.
Sophomore/freshman Beau Mantanona, ranked 21st at 165 pounds, scored the biggest win of his college career to date with a 7-4 decision against No. 9 Andrew Sparks. Mantanona scored on two first-period duck-under takedowns -- the first just 10 seconds into the bout and another seconds after Sparks earned his escape midway through the frame. He fought off a deep single leg late in the second period and fended off a few Minnesota half-shots in the third for his third dual win since returning from injury.
Graduate student Jacob Cardenas, ranked third at 197 pounds, kept his undefeated season alive with an 8-3 decision over eighth-ranked Isaiah Salazar. Cardenas finished on an early double leg in the first period and tacked on four near-fall points off a tilt early in the second. He improved to 11-0 on the season. It was his fifth ranked win of the season.
Michigan gave up late takedowns to come just short in three bouts. Fifth-year senior Jaden Bullock, ranked 20th at 184 pounds, forced overtime against No. 4 Max McEnelly after several regulation scrambles but ultimately fell on a single-leg takedown about a minute into the sudden-victory frame. Sophomore Sergio Lemley and fifth-year senior Joseph Walker also sacrificed close decisions on late takedowns at 141 and 174 pounds, respectively.
The Wolverines also earned strong performances against ranked opponents at 125 and 157 pounds. Senior/junior Wilfried Tanefeu lost a close 5-2 bout to No. 5 Cooper Flynn at 125 pounds, nearly answering a Gopher takedown with one of his own in the first period but didn't get the call -- it was challenged by the Michigan bench and upheld. He drew a stall warning and seemed to have momentum at the end of the second but was ridden for most of the third as Flynn earned 2:01 in advantage time.
Freshman Cameron Catrabone made his dual-meet debut wrestling up a weight class against fifth-year and ninth-ranked Tommy Askey and fell 4-1 after a Minnesota takedown late in the first period -- after nearly scoring himself in the opening 30 seconds. They traded little more than escapes in the second and third.
The Wolverines (4-2, 1-2 Big Ten) will kick off a three-match home stand next Friday (Jan. 24) when they host Nebraska at 6 p.m. at Crisler Center. Michigan will close out the weekend against Indiana next Sunday (Feb. 26) at 1 p.m. at Crisler. Tickets are still available for both duals through the U-M Ticket Office.
