Michigan Sweeps Yale To Open ITA Kick-Off

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and the first three singles matches to shut out Yale 4-0 on Saturday (Jan. 25) in the first round of the ITA Kickoff at the Varsity Tennis Center.
U-M grabbed the early momentum by taking the doubles point, winning two of the three matches. Michigan's pair of Lily Jones and Emily Sartz-Lunde made quick work at No. 3 with a 6-0 win. The Bulldogs took the match at No. 1, bringing all attention to No. 2. Yale held a 2-1 set lead, but the duo of Reese Miller and Julia Fliegner found their rhythm, winning five of the final six sets to take the match 6-3 and secure the doubles point for Michigan.
The Wolverines were strong in singles action, taking five of the six first sets. Fliegner pushed U-M's lead to 2-0 with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1, taking the final five games of the first set and the last four of the second.
Piper Charney added to Michigan's lead, closely following Fliegner with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2. After a strong first-set win, she trailed 3-1 in the second but rallied to win the final five games and secure the match.
Miller accounted for the deciding point, pulling out a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4. In the second set, she led 4-2, and after a long rally with the game tied at 40, Miller won the set to go up 5-2. She held off her opponent and sealed the match with a strong backhand shot.
Michigan will face UCSB, which knocked off Vanderbilt this afternoon, (Sunday, Jan. 26) in the championship match of the ITA Kickoff at 2 p.m.
