ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team won seven of the last eight matches, including five over ranked opponents, to shake off a slow start and surge to a 22-13 win over No. 24 Indiana on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 26) at Crisler Center.
Down 10-0 entering the 141-pound matchup, sophomore Sergio Lemley got Michigan on the board with a 15-2 major decision against 28th-ranked Henry Porter. Lemley, ranked 11th in the latest InterMat poll, scored four takedowns, including two in the third period and one in the final :05 on the edge, and accumulated 2:16 in advantage time.
Freshman Cameron Catrabone earned his first collegiate dual win at 149 pounds -- after competing at 157 last weekend on the road -- with an 8-1 decision against Joey Buttler. Catrabone came out on top in an extended scramble in the first and immediately tacked on a four-point tilt. He was in another scramble at the end of the third period but ran out of time on another takedown and bonus point. He is 11-3 in his rookie campaign.
Graduate student Chase Saldate, ranked 15th at 157 pounds, came up just shy of a major as well with his 11-5 decision against Ryan Garvick. Saldate struck first on a double leg midway through the first and rode out the period before adding two more takedowns in the second, including a single leg in the final 10 seconds. He gave up a score in pursuit of another takedown to ice the bonus but finished with 1:31 in riding-time advantage.
Sophomore/freshman Beau Mantanona maintained the momentum after the intermission, posting an 8-5 decision against 14th-ranked Tyler Lillard at 165 pounds -- his third ranked victory in his last four bouts. Mantanona, ranked 10th, broke the match open in the closing seconds of the first period, using a half nelson from neutral to secure a takedown on the edge and turn Lillard in the final 10. Lillard scored a takedown of his own in the closing seconds of the third to narrow the final margin.
Fifth-year senior Joseph Walker, ranked 29th at 174 pounds, scored takedowns in the first and third periods to edge 26th-ranked Derek Gilcher -- the older brother of the Wolverines' Dylan Gilcher -- by an 8-2 margin. Walker finished on a big double-leg takedown in the final 30 seconds to ice the bout and earned an extra point for his 2:15 in advantage time.
The Wolverines closed out the dual with decisions from its graduate students at 197 pounds and heavyweight. Jacob Cardenas, ranked second nationally, scored on a pair of double-leg takedowns and rode the bulk of the third period to accumulate 2:06 riding-time advantage in an 8-4 decision against 23rd-ranked Gabe Sollars. Cardenas improved to 13-0 on the season.
Josh Heindselman, ranked ninth at heavyweight, earned his second win of the season over the Hoosiers' 19th-ranked Jacob Bullock, 2-1, in a rematch of the Midlands championship final. Heindselman set the tone with numerous single-leg and go-behind attempts but could not finish. He earned a second-period stall point, which proved the difference in the match. Heindselman is 16-1 this season.
The Wolverines (5-3, 2-3 Big Ten) will remain home for another week to host rival Ohio State at 2 p.m. next Saturday (Feb. 1) at Crisler Center. Tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office.
