ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's basketball signee Trey McKenney was named a McDonald's All-American on Monday (Jan. 27), marking the 24th Wolverine honoree in program history.
McKenney, a 6-4 guard, was selected to the East team and is the first player from the state of Michigan to earn a roster spot since Kobe Bufkin.
McKenney is the program's first incoming recruit to be selected as an All-American since 2021, which saw three different Wolverines named to the squads: Bufkin, Moussa Diabate, and Caleb Houstan -- all of whom are currently playing in the NBA. The contest in 2021 did not take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so McKenney could become the first U-M signee to play in the All-Star game since Daniel Horton in 2002.
Currently rated the 17th overall recruit in the nation and a five-star recruit, McKenney is the highest-rated in-state prospect in the 2025 class. Despite battling injuries this season, he is a frontrunner for Michigan's Mr. Basketball. This year, he broke Orchard Lake St. Mary's all-time leading scorer record of 1,688 points, including a 37-point, standout performance in a narrow loss to IMG Academy (Fla.).
As a junior, McKenney was named the 2024 Michigan Associated Press Division 1 Basketball Player of the Year for the second straight year, averaging a double-double of 22.8 points and 10.1 rebounds per game en route to winning the Division 1 State Championship. In the championship game, he had 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
On the international front, McKenney averaged a team second-best 10.8 points per game for Team USA at the 2024 FIBA U18 AmeriCup, helping lead the team to a gold medal.
The McDonald's All-American Game will take place in the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Tuesday, April 1.
