ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Goals came in bunches for the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team as it stormed past Robert Morris by a 10-2 score on Friday night (Oct. 17) inside Yost Ice Arena.
Michigan is 6-0 for the first time to start a season since 1979-80 and has allowed its fewest goals through six games since 1926.
Six Wolverines had three-point games, including Jayden Perron and Josh Eernisse who had two goals and an assist each. A major highlight of the evening was captain T.J. Hughes scoring his 50th career goal.
Freshman goaltender Jack Ivankovic was stout in net for the Wolverines, making 30 saves on 32 shots to earn the win and improve his record to 6-0.
Robert Morris opened the scoring just 2:39 into the contest when Ivankovic was beaten on the blocker side following a crisp pass through the zone that forced him to move across his crease.
A parade to the penalty box occurred for both sides, and the uneven play eventually resulted in power-play time for the home team. While the majority of the unit worked to cycle the puck on the right side of the ice, Perron slipped away into open space to create a wide-open opportunity. Ben Robertson and Aidan Park assisted on the play by moving the puck over to Perron, all alone in the left half of the zone to pick his spot and score his second as a Wolverine.
Fans inside Yost loudly expressed their displeasure when rookie blueliner Asher Barnett was sent off for tripping, but they quickly changed tune when Eernisse bolted down the ice on a breakaway to bury a shorthanded goal. It marked his second shorthanded goal of the season, after netting one against Providence last weekend. Tyler Duke and Kienan Draper collected the assists.
It was Eernisse once again at 7:07 of the second period to double Michigan's lead with a nifty redirection from the slot. Draper, who began the sequence by winning the draw back to a teammate. Sophomore defenseman Dakoda Rhéaume-Mullen collected the puck from Draper and walked the blue line to allow his teammates to find space in the offensive zone. He took a couple of strides to his left before firing a shot on goal that was about three feet off the ground, perfectly placed for Eernisse to get a piece and alter the direction of the shot for his second goal in as many periods. Hughes earned the second assist following another successful faceoff win.
Twenty-three seconds after Hughes had been sent off with a corresponding Colonial for roughing, Will Horcoff embraced the extra ice to work his way into the RMU zone and unleash a perfect shot that was zipped into the top-left corner at 14:06 to pull U-M ahead 4-2. Duke and Henry Mews assisted on Horcoff's snipe.
On the following shift, Draper notched his third point of the night by going hard to the blue paint and keeping his stick on the ice to redirect a slick feed from Perron and make it a 5-2 game. With 25.7 seconds left in the period, Michael Hage scored a power-play goal to give the Wolverines a 6-2 edge after two periods.
The offensive engine continued to roar for Michigan in the final frame of the weekend. Three minutes into the third, Cole McKinney finished off a strong sequence to extend the lead before Park netted his second collegiate goal at 7:55.
Michigan added two more goals late in the third period to bump the final score up to 10-2. First, it was the captain, Hughes, who took advantage of a broken play to net his 50th career goal at 18:29 before Perron finished off the night.
Next week, Michigan continues through the non-conference portion of its schedule as the Wolverines tangle with Western Michigan in a home-and-home series on Thursday and Friday (Oct. 23-24). The old CCHA foes will face off at Yost on Thursday before the teams head west to finish off the two-game set in Kalamazoo. Puck drop for both nights is set for 7 p.m.
