ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored twice on its attack corner in the first half to kick off its MarciaPalooza celebration with a 2-1 win against Penn State on Friday night (Oct. 13) in front of 947 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. The Wolverines honored former head coach Marcia Pankratz, who retired in April, during a halftime ceremony.

Michigan (6-3, 2-1 Big Ten) struck quickly, scoring on its second penalty corner chance of the contest at the 7:08 mark. Freshman Maxine Rogge's initial shot was saved but remained in a scrum in front of the cage before spurting out toward the right post for sophomore Cami Wiseman to knock in. It was her second goal of the season.

Rogge assisted on another late in the second quarter, at 27:12, when her direct shot from the arc was touched by graduate student Abby Tamer near the left post for the latter's sixth goal of the season.

PSU (5-5, 1-2 Big Ten) spoiled the shutout bid with an early goal in the third quarter, at 31:07, after driving the circle two-on-two, dishing a pass to the left side behind the Wolverine defense and finishing with a reverse shot to the opposite lower corner.

Shots were even at 12, while Michigan held a narrow 6-5 edge in penalty corners, including three in the second quarter. Junior/sophomore Hala Silverstein and graduate student Caylie McMahon combined for seven stops -- with an additional defensive save from Taylor. Silverstein posted five saves in the first half. PSU goalkeeper Aby Deverka earned six saves on U-M's eight shots on goal.

Michigan will close out the weekend homestand against Rutgers at noon on Sunday (Oct. 5) for Alumni Day at Ocker Field. Admission is free, and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
