
Hocker Singh Paces Michigan in Ninth-Place Finish at B1G Championships

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's cross country team opened the postseason at the Big Ten Championships on Friday (Oct. 31), placing ninth with 278 points at Forest Akers East Golf Course.
Oregon (18) claimed the championship title, while Penn State (78) and Northwestern (96) rounded out the top three.
Penelopea Gordon led U-M through the first kilometer, with Anjali Hocker Singh sitting in 30th and the Wolverine quartet of Natalie VanOtteren (42nd), Hannah Pricco (44th), Gabbie Michael (46th) and Katelyn Watkins (47th) in the top 50.
Gordon fell to 26th and Hocker Singh moved to 29th at the 2K mark before Gordon fell just behind Hocker Singh for the pair to sit at 29th and 30th, respectively, at the halfway point. Gordon (32nd) and Hocker Singh (33rd) fell in the standings heading into the final two kilometers, while Michael moved up eight spots to 56th and Watkins moved up seven spots to 68th.
Hocker Singh took the lead of the Wolverine contingent with one kilometer left, falling to 40th place. Michael and Watkins continued to move up, sitting at 53rd and 60th, respectively.
Hocker Singh was the first to cross the finish line for U-M, placing 43rd with a time of 21:01.6. Watkins was the second Wolverine to finish, moving up five spots to come in 55th (21:09.5) just ahead of Michael at 56th (21:12.3). The pair saw personal-best performances.
Michigan will continue its postseason on Friday, Nov. 14, when the Wolverines travel to Evansville, Ind., for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The race is set to begin at 11 a.m. CT in Evansville, Ind.
