ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan football team recorded a 21-16 victory over Purdue under the lights Saturday (Nov. 1) at Michigan Stadium, marking U-M's seventh consecutive victory over Purdue. The Maize and Blue outgained the Boilermakers 398-276, largely on the back of the ground game led by sophomore running back Jordan Marshall.
Following punts by Hudson Hollenbeck on the first two Wolverine possessions, Marshall totaled 79 yards by himself to open the scoring. After a 25-yard screen pass to start the drive, Marshall took a handoff up the middle for 54 yards to the end zone -- his third touchdown of 50-plus yards this season.
The score was the first of three Marshall touchdowns for the game, as he punched in a three-yard rushing touchdown to give Michigan the lead going into the half, and broke a three-drive Wolverine scoring drought with a nine-yard score in the fourth quarter.
Overall, Marshall had 25 carries for 185 yards, his third straight game eclipsing the century mark on the ground, and eclipsing a new career high set earlier this season against Washington (Oct. 18). In total, Michigan recorded 253 yards on the ground, eclipsing their season average of 220.1, which was good for third in the Big Ten coming into tonight's action.
Despite the Boilermakers possessing the ball longer than the Maize and Blue, 19:55 to 10:05, in the first half, the Michigan defense came through when needed, holding Purdue to just seven points. Derrick Moore was a big factor in the first-half defense with a pair of sacks, with his first moving the ball out of field goal range, and his second forcing a fumble recovered by Rayshaun Benny.
After entering the half with a one-score lead, the Wolverines struggled to get much going in the second half. U-M was forced to punt twice, and a fumble out of the end zone kept Purdue in the game before Marshall's third score of the game. The fumble was one of two red-zone turnovers for Michigan in the contest, missing out on some important points in the close game.
Michigan held the Boilermakers in check through the air all game, keeping them to just 138 passing yards, a season low for Purdue. Overall, U-M forced four punts and two turnovers in the contest, its fifth time holding an opponent under 20 points this season.
Linebackers Ernest Hausmann and Troy Bowles stepped up in the absence of Jimmy Rolder and Cole Sullivan, with Hausmann recording a team-leading 11 tackles -- including one TFL -- and Bowles posting a career-high six tackles.
Michigan will be on a bye week next week and will pick up action on Saturday, Nov. 15, when they take on Northwestern at Wrigley Field. Game time and broadcast details are yet to be announced.
