
Three Named All-Region as U-M Takes Fifth at NCAA Regionals

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's cross country team earned a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals on Friday (Nov. 14), with three Wolverines finishing in the top 25 to earn All-Region honors.
Notre Dame (60), Butler (75) and Wisconsin (99) comprised the top three teams.
Early in the race, Luke Venhuizen sat in fourth, while Nathan Lopez and Caleb Jarema held seventh and 10th through two kilometers. At the 4K split, Venhuizen remained inside the top 10 at eighth, with Lopez in 12th. Trent McFarland and Jarema were close together in 20th and 21st, separated by just 0.14 seconds.
At six kilometers, Lopez surged into eighth as Michigan's top runner. Venhuizen slipped to 21st, while McFarland held firm in 25th.
With under two kilometers remaining, Lopez remained the lead Wolverine in 14th. Venhuizen (21st) and McFarland (24th) stayed in All-Region position, while Brendan Herger and Jarema each moved up a spot to 41st and 43rd.
Lopez was the first Wolverine across the line, placing 14th in a personal-best 30:08.21. McFarland followed in 19th (30:26.39) and Venhuizen finished 23rd (30:28.71) to round out Michigan's All-Region trio. Herger placed 35th (30:57.47), Nolan Clark was 44th (31:20.45), and Jarema took 46th (31:25.65). In his regional debut, freshman Luke Alverson placed 110th in 32:41.83.
Michigan will learn its NCAA Championships fate during the NCAA Selection Show, streaming Saturday (Nov. 15) at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com. If selected, the Wolverines will compete in Columbia, Mo.
