BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Junior Abby Burnett took advantage of a double-overtime penalty corner to register the game-winning tally at 75:22, propelling the No. 15-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to a 2-1 win against No. 17 Rutgers in the Big Ten Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday (Nov. 6) at Indiana's Deborah Tobias Field. It was the Wolverines' first overtime game of the season.
After a back-and-forth first overtime, the Wolverines posted seven shots and drew four penalty corners to largely dominate the second. Burnett stopped the insert at the top of the arc, got the ball back from graduate student Claire Taylor and peeled right to take a shot. The ball ramped off a Rutgers defender's stick and went high into the top-left corner of the cage. It was Burnett's second goal of the season -- and second in as many games.
Michigan (10-6) appeared to have the game won twice before Burnett's game-winner. Taylor buried a direct corner shot with just :06 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the ball was deemed high and the goal was waved off to force overtime. Graduate student Abby Tamer also had a great look early in the second overtime, deking out the Scarlet Knights' goalkeeper to put a shot on a wide-open cage. But Rutgers' Puck Winter lunged her stick out to knock the ball out of the air and away from the goal.
The Wolverines led for about a quarter during regulation when freshman Maxine Rogge scored off a corner at the 30:39 mark, just 39 seconds into the second half. Rogge nailed a sweep from the top of the arc for her third goal of the season. Taylor and fifth-year senior Emmy Tran earned assists on the stop and insert, respectively.
Rutgers (9-9) evened the score early in the fourth, at 46:45, after intercepting a pass in the midfield. Anna Cogdell received the ball in the circle and fed a goalmouth pass to Olivia Fraticelli, who knocked it in from the left post.
Michigan outshot the Scarlet Knights 25-9 and outcornered them 13-3. Junior/sophomore goalkeeper Hala Silverstein and graduate student Caylie McMahon combined for three saves. Silverstein started the game and played both overtimes; she posted a quality stop and another breakup off a Rutgers 2-on-1 in the circle in the first overtime. RU goalkeeper Emily Nichols earned 10 saves on U-M's 12 shots on goal.
The Wolverines will face top-seeded and No. 2-ranked Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals at 1 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 7) at Tobias Field. The game will air live on Big Ten Network. Michigan has reached the semifinals in 10 of the last 12 seasons.
