ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team earned six bout wins, including the last three and four with bonus points, to defeat in-state rival Michigan State, 27-12, in its Big Ten Conference dual finale on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 16) at Jenison Field House.
Sophomore Sergio Lemley put the Wolverines on the board with big bonus points, securing a third-period pin against Jaden Crumpler at 141 pounds. Lemley, ranked 12th nationally, scored takedowns in the second and early in the third before executing a feet-to-back move on a single-leg attempt when Crumpler dove underneath. He earned a four-count before transitioning into a crusher position to secure the fall at 6:14—his first pin of the season.
Sophomore/freshman Dylan Gilcher earned a 4-1 decision against former high school teammate Clayton Jones at 149 pounds, giving U-M a 9-6 lead. Gilcher pressured forward, moving Jones to the edge before the Spartan attempted an inside trip. Gilcher used a body-lock position to lift and take him down with a toe in bounds, securing the winning takedown.
Sophomore/freshman Beau Mantanona, ranked 10th at 165 pounds, added more bonus points after the intermission break with a 13-3 major decision over Jay Nivison. Mantanona struck on a low single almost immediately in the first period and rode out the frame, picking up three stall calls and two points. He added another single-leg takedown in the second along with another two-point stall call and accumulated 3:11 of riding time.
Fifth-year senior Jaden Bullock used a first-period takedown and 1:19 of riding time to defeat Luke Daly, 5-3, at 184 pounds. Bullock, ranked 26th nationally, finished a single-leg takedown midway through the opening frame and nearly rode out the period.
Graduate student Jacob Cardenas, ranked fourth at 197 pounds, won by injury default over 26th-ranked Remy Cotton at the 1:37 mark. The two clashed heads early in the bout, and while Cardenas finished a takedown at the edge, it was waved off as Cotton entered concussion protocol and was unable to continue.
Graduate student Josh Heindselman, ranked eighth nationally, put an exclamation point on Michigan's win with a dominant 21-5 technical fall against Luke Vanadia in the final heavyweight bout. Heindselman used a variety of single legs and go-behinds to score seven takedowns—three each in the first and second periods—before ending the match with a go-behind at the 5:13 mark in the third. It was his team-best ninth tech fall of the season.
The Wolverines (6-5, 3-5 Big Ten) will wrap up the dual-meet portion of their 2024-25 schedule next Sunday (Feb. 23) when they host in-state foe Central Michigan at 5 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. Tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office.
