
Wolverines Drop Road Contest at No. 21 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team closed to within two points in the final two minutes but could not get any closer as No. 21-ranked Maryland used a strong second half to claim an 85-77 win over the Wolverines on Monday evening (Feb. 17) at the Xfinity Center.
Michigan had four players in double figures, led by Olivia Olson's game-high 26 points and seven rebounds. Syla Swords contributed 19 points and six rebounds, while Jordan Hobbs added 13 points and Yulia Grabovskaia chipped in 11 points off the bench. The Wolverines committed just eight turnovers in the contest, but Maryland held a 39-37 advantage on the glass and outscored Michigan by 10 in the second half.
The teams exchanged leads early before a bucket from Swords, followed by an Olson three-pointer, pushed Michigan's lead to 15-9 with 3:25 remaining in the first quarter. Hobbs nailed a triple, and after a Maryland bucket, she converted a left-handed layup to beat the first-quarter buzzer, giving Michigan a 22-15 lead after 10 minutes.
Swords found Mila Holloway for a left-corner triple at the 8:10 mark of the second quarter, giving Michigan its largest lead of the game at 30-20.
Maryland responded with a 9-2 run, forcing a Michigan timeout at the 6:20 mark as the Wolverines' lead shrank to 32-29. Michigan answered with a Swords three-pointer from the top of the key, followed by a putback from Te'Yala Delfosse to push the lead back to eight at 37-29.
Maryland ended the second quarter on a 7-0 run, leaving Michigan with a 40-38 lead at the break. Swords had 13 points in the first half, while Olson contributed 11. The Wolverines hit six three-pointers on 50 percent shooting in the half.
Maryland scored six of the first seven points of the third quarter to take a 44-41 lead after a four-point trip in the opening moments. A Hobbs runner briefly stopped the run, but the Terps extended their advantage to 48-43 with 7:30 remaining in the third.
Michigan cut the deficit to two after a Grabovskaia layup with 5:28 remaining, making it 50-48. Maryland responded with seven of the next nine points, extending the lead to 57-50 just over a minute later. A layup from Swords and a pair of Grabovskaia free throws brought Michigan within three at 57-54.
Olson scored with just under a minute left in the third, sending Michigan into the fourth quarter down just one point at 60-59.
The Terps pushed their lead to six points midway through the fourth quarter before Grabovskaia converted a layup and was fouled. Olson grabbed the rebound off the free throw attempt and converted the putback, pulling Michigan to within two at 72-70 with 4:36 remaining.
Maryland countered, pushing the lead back to six, but Michigan refused to go away. Olson hit a layup out of a Michigan timeout, followed by a pair of free throws from the freshman with 2:23 remaining to make it 76-74, Maryland. Michigan got no closer the rest of the way, as the Wolverines were forced to foul, and Maryland converted from the line to seal the win.
Michigan returns to Crisler Center on Saturday (Feb. 22) for its penultimate home game, hosting Penn State at noon. The Wolverines' senior class of Greta Kampschroeder and Hobbs will be honored prior to the game (approximately 11:45 a.m.) as part of Senior Day.
