TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of Michigan softball team split its final two games at the South Florida Showdown, falling to Louisville 5-3 in eight innings before bouncing back with a 10-0, five-inning win against Troy on Saturday (Feb. 22) at USF Softball Stadium.
Michigan (8-5) manufactured 10 runs on six hits against Troy (6-6) in the day's second game, breaking it open with a six-run third inning before adding three more in the fourth to invoke the run rule.
Ella Stephenson went 3-for-3 against the Trojans, finishing the day with four hits and two RBIs. Madi Ramey added a three-run homer in the win over Troy.
Erin Hoehn (5-2) earned the victory, holding Troy scoreless on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts over three innings. Freshman Kat Meyers closed the game with two perfect innings in relief, adding her first collegiate strikeout.
The Wolverines capitalized on several Troy errors to build an early lead. They scored their first and eventual game-winning run on a throwing error in the second inning. Michigan loaded the bases in the fourth and scored three times through a fielder's choice, single, and walk before adding two more runs on another fielding miscue.
Ramey capped the offensive surge with her first home run of the season — a two-out, three-run shot over the right-field fence — after freshman Megan Beemer led off with a walk and advanced to third on a single and groundout.
Earlier in the day, Michigan twice rallied against Louisville (9-3) but never led, as the Cardinals ended U-M's five-game winning streak.
Louisville struck first with two runs in the opening frame, but Michigan answered in the bottom half with a two-out RBI single from Lauren Putz. The Wolverines tied the game at 2-2 when senior Ella McVey reached on a fielder's choice with runners on the corners and no outs.
The Cardinals reclaimed the lead with a leadoff homer in the third inning. Michigan responded again in the sixth when Stephenson delivered a sacrifice fly to right field after the Wolverines loaded the bases with one out.
The game moved to extra innings tied 3-3. Louisville put two runners in scoring position with one out in the eighth. Lauren Derkowski responded with a five-pitch strikeout but issued a walk before Easton Lotus laced a two-run double down the left-field line for the go-ahead runs.
Michigan threatened in the home half of the eighth when Jenissa Conway singled through the right side to advance Ramey to third, but a popout to shallow center field ended the comeback attempt.
Derkowski (3-2) took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits and four walks with four strikeouts.
The Wolverines will head to North Carolina for spring break, playing 12 games over a 10-day stretch. U-M opens the road trip against Duke at 5 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 27) at Duke Softball Stadium in Durham before competing in a five-game set at The Raleigh Times from Friday through Sunday (Feb. 28-March 2) at NC State's Dail Softball Stadium.
