ARLINGTON, Texas -- The University of Michigan baseball team dropped the final game of the College Baseball Series to No. 5 Arkansas, 8-6, on Sunday (Feb. 23) at Globe Life Field.
Michigan (4-3) was led at the plate by Robert Hamchuk, who tallied three hits, three RBIs and two runs. Cade Ladehoff and Cole Caruso each tallied two hits and scored a run. Caruso and Hamchuk both homered in the contest. On the mound, Gavin DeVooght got the start and struck out three batters in 2.1 innings and allowed three earned runs. David Lally Jr. was strong in relief pitching three innings and allowing one run while striking out three.
Ladehoff singled with one out in the first and moved to second after a pitch hit Jeter Ybarra. Mitch Voit reached on an error which allowed Ladehoff to score from second to give U-M a 1-0 lead. The Wolverines could not add more as two strikeouts ended the inning.
Arkansas (6-1) had a strong start offensively scoring two runs in the first, two in the second and three in the third inning to take a 7-1 lead. U-M could not get a runner past first base again until the fifth inning where a hit by pitch and walk put two runners on, but two strikeouts ended the frame.
The Razorbacks extended their lead with a solo home run in the fifth inning. U-M countered with back-to-back home runs to open the sixth inning with Caruso and Hamchuk homering to left field. David Lally Jr. got two batters looking to keep Arkansas off the board in the sixth and pitched a scoreless seventh.
U-M got one run back in the top of the eighth after a leadoff single from Hamchuk. After two wild pitches, Hamchuk scored with two outs on a sacrifice fly from Jonathan Kim.
Tate Carey gave Michigan a chance to come back in the ninth after a scoreless bottom of the eighth. The Wolverines got a two-out double from Noah Miller and Caruso reached on an error and both scored on a liner to centerfield from Hamchuk. Max Debiec got an infield single to bring to go-ahead run to the plate but a groundout ended the game.
