
McFarland Sets Mile Meet Record; U-M 11th to Open B1G Indoor Championships

INDIANAPOLIS -- Trent McFarland of the University of Michigan men's track and field team set the meet record in the mile run on Friday (Feb. 28) as he and the Wolverines opened the Big Ten Indoor Championships at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Entering the meet, the previous standard of 4:00.56 was set by U-M director of track and field and cross country Kevin Sullivan in 1998. Four times in the second heat bested the record, with McFarland crossing the fastest, while Jonathan Miles saw a personal best of 4:00.80.
In the final heat, McFarland sat in third going into the final lap. The sophomore moved ahead of Oregon's Elliott Cook and Washington's Cole Lindhorst in the final 200 meters, winning the preliminaries and setting the new meet record at 3:59.29. McFarland and Miles advanced to Saturday's (March 1) finals.
A pair of Wolverines set personal bests in the 400-meter dash, with Jack Juds (47.33 seconds) finishing 17th and Jacob Koerner (47.72) finishing 18th. Juds' time is No. 9 on the program performers list.
John O'Reilly set a new personal best time (1:16:88) in the 600-meter run, finishing fourth in the preliminaries to advance to the finals. O'Reilly's time comes in at No. 2 on the program performers list. Camden Law advanced to the 800-meter finals after finishing fourth in the preliminaries with a time of 1:47.81.
John McNeil scored three points for the Maize and Blue with a sixth-place finish in the long jump (7.50m/24 feet, 7.25 inches).
The Wolverines will close out the Big Ten Championships on Saturday at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, with the high jump at 11:10 a.m. set to kick off the day.
