ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Former University of Michigan wrestler head coach Dale Bahr and alumnus Mike Amine will be inducted into the Michigan Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the organization announced last month. The induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 17, at Weber's Inn in Ann Arbor.
The duo will be inducted alongside former Michigan State head coach Tom Minkel and high school coaches Sam Davis, Tim Jones, Gary Rivers and Pat Wyka.
Bahr, who was also a 2012 inductee to the NWHOF's Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa, will enter under the Lifetime Service to Wrestling category. Bahr was an NCAA champion and three-time All-American at Iowa State before taking the helm of the Michigan wrestling program for more than 20 years (1978-99). Bahr coached two NCAA champions (Mark Churella, Kirk Trost) and led the Wolverines to six top-10 finishes, including fifth-place finishes in 1985, 1989 and 1994.
He also led Michigan to the dual title at the 1989 Great American Classic, earning a 23-17 win over Iowa in the finals to claim the de factor Big Ten dual championship. His 221 career wins rank second to the legendary Cliff Keen for most wins in school history, while he recruited and coached both of his successors -- Joe McFarland and Sean Bormet -- at Michigan.
Amine, who was a member of Bahr's Great American Classic squad, will be inducted in the Outstanding American category. An NCAA finalist, three-time NCAA qualifier at 167 pounds and two-year team captain at Michigan, Amine transitioned to the financial services industry after college -- and currently manages Wealth Strategies Financial Group -- while continuing to coach, mentor and hire wrestlers within the community.
He served on the Letterwinners M Club board from 2000-10 -- as president in 2010 -- and is one of the patriarchs of Michigan wrestling's expansive Amine family, which also includes his brother Sam (1988-90), sons Malik (2016-19) and Myles (2017-19, '21-22) and nephews Jordan (2015-18) and Cameron (2021-24). The Amines claimed the NWHOF Michigan Chapter's Family Legacy Award in 2016.
