
Michigan Notches Top-15 Win with Victory over No. 12 Penn

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team earned its first win over a ranked opponent in 2025, defeating No. 12 Penn 15-8 on Saturday (March 1) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium on Senior Day.
The Wolverines (4-1) had eight different goal scorers, including five who recorded multi-goal games, to secure the win at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Junior Calli Norris and senior Julia Schwabe both tallied hat tricks in the win, while Schwabe added an assist to tie for a team-best four points with Kaylee Dyer and Jill Smith. Dyer recorded two goals and two assists, while Smith had one goal and three assists for the Wolverines.
As a team, Michigan put 23 of 31 shots on goal and capitalized on six free position opportunities.
Defensively, Grace Callahan had a career-best four caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Dyer recorded three caused turnovers and Maya Rutherford added two in the first half. Senior goalie Erin O'Grady made eight saves.
Following the win against Penn (2-2), Michigan celebrated its senior class, which has led the program to three straight NCAA Tournaments and an NCAA Quarterfinal appearance.
Smith scored just 37 seconds into the game to put the Wolverines on the board first, and Penn responded five minutes later to tie the score at 1-1. Michigan used free position goals from Norris and Ava Class to close out the first quarter with a 3-1 lead.
Class opened the second quarter with her second free position goal of the game before a one-timer goal from Schwabe off a pass from Dyer extended the run. Jane Fetterolf capitalized on Michigan's fourth free position opportunity to push the lead to 6-1 with 7:52 left in the half.
Penn got one back, but Schwabe added her second goal of the day off a pass from Smith, and Dyer converted another free position shot to send U-M into halftime with an 8-2 lead.
Michigan put 12 of its 15 first-half shots on goal, with Schwabe and Class each scoring twice. Dyer and Smith contributed two points apiece with a goal and an assist. Callahan and Dyer each recorded three caused turnovers, while Rutherford added two.
Freshman Caroline Byrd fired a behind-the-back goal with one second on the shot clock to open the third quarter. Penn attempted a rally, but U-M answered with two goals, including one from Taylor Cullen, to take an 11-4 lead. The Quakers added a late goal in the final second of the quarter, and Michigan entered the fourth with an 11-5 advantage.
Michigan outscored Penn 4-3 in the fourth quarter to seal the win over the top-15 opponent.
U-M will play two games in Colorado, beginning Wednesday (March 5) against Denver at noon MST.
