ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's basketball incoming freshman guard Trey McKenney was announced as the 45th recipient of the Hal Schram Mr. Basketball award for the State of Michigan on Monday (March 11).
McKenney, a senior at Orchard Lake St. Mary's, amassed 4,897 points in the voting for the state's top basketball honor. Runner-up Leroy Blyden of U-D Jesuit totaled 2,019; Ann Arbor Huron's Macari Moore was third with 1,975 points, and Detroit Renaissance's Lance Stone was fourth with 1,711.
The consensus five-star guard and McDonald's All-American selection is averaging 22.9 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists for St. Mary's. Over four years, he has averaged 22.9 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and scored 1,930 points.
The Flint, Mich., native, was named the Michigan Associated Press (AP) Division 1 Player of the Year twice (2023 and 2024) and Michigan's Gatorade Player of the Year (2024).
In addition to helping the Eaglets win three Catholic League championships, McKenney guided St. Mary's to the 2024 MHSSA Division 1 state championship, finishing with 32 points and 10 rebounds in the title game. As a sophomore, he led the Eaglets to advance to the semifinals and had a quarterfinal appearance as a freshman.
This summer, he helped Team USA to the 2024 FIBA Men's U18 AmeriCup in Argentina. He started all six games and averaged the second-most points on the team (10.8 ppg), along with 5.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.3 steals in 18.8 minutes.
McKenney joins an illustrious list of Michigan players to be named the State of Michigan's Mr. Basketball. Since 1981, he has become the 13th Wolverine to earn the accolade and the second straight after current Wolverine Phat Phat Brooks (Grand Rapids Catholic Central) earned the honor in 2024.Â
