COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The University of Michigan softball team scored first and last en route to an 8-4 decision against Princeton in its first game of the Mizzou Invitational on Friday afternoon (March 14) at Mizzou Softball Stadium. The Wolverines' scheduled night game against host Missouri was postponed due to inclement weather.
Michigan (19-7) will now play two games Saturday (March 15), taking on Missouri at 9 a.m. CT and South Dakota State at 11:30 a.m. CT.
The Wolverines built a 4-0 lead against Princeton (5-12) and, after the Tigers used a pair of home runs to even the score with a four-run fifth, Michigan matched it with another four runs in the next inning.
Freshman designated player Lauren Putz and senior left fielder Ellie Sieler tallied three hits apiece and combined for five RBI in the middle of the Wolverines' order and helped the Wolverines break through in the third inning. Junior second baseman Indiana Langford beat out an infield single to lead off the frame, advanced on a two-out walk and scored when Putz ripped a single up the middle.
Putz came home herself when Sieler doubled to the right-center gap on the next pitch.
Junior first baseman Madi Ramey led off the fourth with a solo homer to right field -- her fourth of the season and third over the last two games -- but Princeton answered with two home runs of its own to tie the game in the fifth, including a three-run shot with two outs to bring senior right-handed pitcher Lauren Derkowski in to pitch for Michigan.
The Wolverines stranded two in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth but retook the lead in their next turn, drawing back-to-back walks to lead off the sixth before sophomore right fielder Ella Stephenson plated the go-ahead run with a double down the right-field line. Princeton got to two outs and then made a pitching change, but the move did little to stymie the Michigan rally. Sophomore center fielder Jenissa Conway scored on a passed ball that kicked wide of home plate and Putz added extra insurance with a two-run blast to right-center field for her team-best eighth home run.
Derkowski (7-4) earned the win in relief, tossing 2.1 shutout innings with four strikeouts and two walks and no hits allowed.
