GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Battling rainy conditions, including a 30-minute delay due to thunderstorms, the University of Michigan women's golf team grinded out a final-round 298 on Saturday (March 8) to finish eighth at Florida's Gators Invitational, played at the Mark Bostick Golf Course.
Originally scheduled for a three-day tournament, the threat of potential poor weather on Sunday (March 9) reduced the spring event to two days. With Friday's (March 7) play increasing to 36 holes, the Wolverines had tallies of 288 and 293 to position themselves in a tie for seventh (581).
With four birdies highlighting her first round, Mara Janess paced the Wolverines early with her third consecutive career-low round of 70 (E). She closed the spring-opening Spartans Sun Coast Invitational setting her career-low of 72 in the second and third rounds.
Adding a 73 in the second round, Janess closed the first day in Gainesville at 143 (+3) and sat in a tie for 17th, along with teammate Lauren Sung (72-71). Meanwhile, Sydney Sung, who played as an individual, used tallies of 70 and 71 to position herself among the top 10 at 141 (t-10th).
As the expected rains swept through the area, Janess closed with a 71 (+1) to help her pace the Maize and Blue for a second straight event as her 214 (+4) tied her for 13th. Lauren Sung posted her fourth top-20 finish, tying for 17th at 215 (72-71-72). With a 298 final-round team total, U-M was eighth after tallying an 879-event total.
Despite a final-round 77, Sydney Sung earned a top-25 finish as an individual as her 218 (70-71-77) gave her a tie for 23rd.
With a short return to Ann Arbor, U-M will head back to competition, playing in the Valspar Augusta Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (March 15-16). The 54-hole event will be played at the Forest Hills Golf Course. Last season, the Wolverines shared a runner-up team finish with an 859 (-5) total at the event.
