LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team had a three-match win streak halted at the hands of UCLA on Friday evening (April 11) at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, as the Bruins won 5-0.
Without its top two players, Michigan was forced to move around its lineup to assemble new doubles combinations. For the first time in six matches, the Wolverines dropped the doubles point.
Bjorn Swenson and Mert Oral captured a win, defeating Spencer Johnson and Rudy Quan 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. It was the duo's first time playing at the No. 2 position, and they improved to 3-0 in the Big Ten and 6-3 in dual play.
Will Cooksey and Alex Cairo played at No. 1 for the first time as a pair, falling 6-1 while Patorn Hanchaikul and Nicholas Steiglehner paired up for the first time of this season, losing 6-3 at No. 3.
Steiglhener fell 6-4, 6-3 to Alexander Hoogmartens at No. 3, Oral dropped 6-2, 6-3 sets to Giacomo Revelli at No. 6 and Gianluca Ballotta defeated Cairo 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5. No. 80-ranked Cooksey had a four-match singles win streak end at No. 1 singles in back-to-back 6-3 losses to No. 34 ranked Quan.
The Wolverines look to rebound on Sunday (April 13), when they take on USC at noon PT at Marks Tennis Stadium.
