CARLSBAD, Calif. -- With a 224 54-hole total, senior Hunter Thomson of the University of Michigan men's golf team tied for 77th at the NCAA Championship on Sunday (May 25), missing the advancing cut to the fourth round and bringing U-M's season, and his Wolverine career, to an end.
After winning the NCAA Urbana Regional, Thomson earned one of six individual spots at nationals. In Friday's (May 23) first round, he struggled to find a steady rhythm, carding a 79 (+7) to sit in a tie for 141st. Returning Saturday (May 24) morning, he recorded 12 pars and four birdies to fire a 71 (-1), his 24th sub-par round of the season, and vaulted 52 spots into a tie for 89th (150, +7).
In Sunday's third round, Thomson opened with a birdie on the 10th hole, his starting hole, for the second straight day. After six consecutive pars, he bogeyed the 17th to return to even par but rebounded quickly with a birdie on the par-5, 557-yard 18th to make the turn at one-under.
He added birdies at Nos. 2 and 5 to move to three-under with four holes to play. However, back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 7 and 8 cut into his progress. Still at one-under with one hole remaining, a closing triple bogey led to a final-round 75 and a 224 total, tying him for 77th and outside the cut for Monday's (May 26) final round.
Overall, Thomson tallied 11 birdies in the championship, with eight coming on the North Course's 12 par 5s.
Thomson concludes his U-M career as the program's all-time scoring leader with a 71.53 average. He became just the second Wolverine to lead the team in scoring average four straight years, joining former All-American Kyle Mueller.
He never missed a U-M event, starting 50 consecutive tournaments. In his career, Thomson compiled 26 top-10 finishes, 15 top-five results, and four individual titles. He recorded 66 sub-par rounds — 40 of which were sub-70.
