JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team opened the first day of competition at the NCAA East First Round, with one athlete qualifying for the NCAA Championships and four advancing to the quarterfinals.
Freshman Josh Huisman punched his ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a 10th-place finish in the shot put, an event that was moved to Thursday (May 29) due to severe-weather delays on Wednesday. His first throw of the day went the farthest, throwing for a personal best 18.95 meters (62 feet, 2.25 inches). Aiden Felty also competed in the shot put, fouling on all three of his attempts.
On Thursday (May 28), the delays significantly impacted the afternoon schedule, delaying track events by four and a half hours.
Once competition resumed, Trent McFarland (3:39.79) and Brendan Herger (3:41.72) advanced to the 1,500-meter run quarterfinals after finishing in the top five of their respective heats. Aiden Sullivan also ran in the event (4:40.08), suffering a fall in the final curve after colliding with Emedy Kiplimo of LSU. Following a protest, the contact was deemed incidental, allowing both Sullivan and Kiplimo to advance to the quarterfinals.
Camden Law (1:48.30) finished 20th in the 800-meter run and advanced on time to Friday's quarterfinals. Miles Brown finished 23rd with a time of 1:48.43), while John O'Reilly finished 25th with a time of 1:48.49.
In the 10,000-meter run, Luke Venhuizen finished 40th with a time of 30:26.07 and Owen MacKenzie finished 45th with a time of 31:27.24.
Eli Winter finished 16th in the hammer throw with a mark of 64.07m (210-2).
Michigan will close out the NCAA East First Round on Friday (May 30) beginning at 5:15 p.m. with the 1,500-meter run quarterfinals.
