EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team opened the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday (June 11) at Hayward Field with a pair of Wolverines advancing to the finals round on Friday.
Trent McFarland and Brendan Herger had impressive NCAA Outdoor Championships debuts, with both advancing to Friday's finals in the 1,500-meter run. The duo stayed in front of the pack the whole race before McFarland finished second (3:52.17) and Herger finished fourth (3:52.36) in their heat. Both earned an automatic finals berth for finishing in the top five of their heat.
Freshman Josh Huisman also made his NCAA Outdoor Championships debut, finishing 20th in the shot put. Huisman's best throw of the day came on his first attempt, throwing for 18.33 meters (60 feet, 1.75 inches) and fouling on his final two attempts. That finish earned him honorable mention All-America recognition.
Michigan will close out the 2025 season on Friday (June 13) with the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. McFarland and Herger will represent the Maize and Blue in the 1,500-meter finals at 5:12 p.m. PT.
