LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Will Horcoff of the University of Michigan ice hockey team was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins with the 24th overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft on Friday night (June 28).
Horcoff is coming off his freshman season at Michigan, having joined the team midseason from the U.S. National Team Development Program. The Birmingham, Mich., native made his debut as a Wolverine at Wrigley Field, scoring a goal and an assist in his first game. He finished the season with 10 points on four goals and six assists in 18 games. In May, Horcoff won a bronze medal at the 2025 U18 World Championship, collecting four points in seven games. He adds that to a gold medal from the 2024 U18 Five Nations and a silver medal from the 2023 World U17 Hockey Challenge. Before coming to Michigan, Horcoff played 28 games with the USNTDP and tallied 18 points. He spent the 2023-24 season with the program's U17 team and previously played for Little Caesars. Horcoff set the NHL Combine record in the horizontal jump, reaching 12.48 inches in June, and was in the top 15 in six other fitness tests.
Horcoff's father, Shawn, played 16 years in the NHL and is currently the assistant general manager of the Detroit Red Wings.
Will Horcoff is the 35th first-round selection for the Wolverines, as the program continues to lead all universities with the most first-round selections of all time. In the last five years, Michigan leads the way with 26 first-round selections.
Rounds 2-7 will be held on Saturday (June 28) beginning at noon on ESPN+ and NHL Network.
