ATHENS, Ga. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team was blanked by Georgia 3-0 on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 24) at the Turner Soccer Complex. Senior goalkeeper Sophie Homan made four saves, but smothering defensive pressure limited the Wolverines to just one shot on goal.
A long-distance snipe from 26 yards away jolted Georgia (3-1) in front heading into half, and two more scores in the final 45 minutes put the game out of reach for U-M's stifled offense.
In the opening minutes, both teams took a cautious approach and did not log any shots until a Bulldog attempt went wide of the frame at the 10-minute mark.
A shot from Campbell Jewell was blocked in the 16th minute, the only attempt of the half for U-M, and moments later a crossing pass from Kali Burrell nearly found the foot of a streaking Jenna Lang before being broken up at the last second.
Georgia eventually paid off its lopsided first-half possession with a goal from outside of the box in the 19th minute. Pinned in its defensive third, Michigan (2-2) could not drum up much offense outside of an off-target header from Gabrielle Prych in the box two minutes before half.
The Bulldogs doubled their advantage in the opening minutes of the second stanza. Ella Jablinskey nearly cut the lead in half when she sneaked behind the Georgia backline at the 55-minute mark, but her shot went wide.
Six fouls highlighted the ensuing 15 minutes, until Taylor Brennan found herself in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Her shot to the bottom-left corner was denied, and the Bulldog keeper gobbled up the cleanup attempt from Prych moments later.
Georgia slotted the final goal of the contest with 20 minutes remaining before both teams went to their benches to close out the final ticks of the clock.
Michigan finishes its three-match road trip with another non-conference test at Notre Dame on Thursday (Aug. 28) at 6 p.m. inside Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Ind. The fixture will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
