COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Goalkeeper Sophie Homan matched her career high with six saves to help the University of Michigan women's soccer team shut out No. 22 Ohio State in a scoreless draw on Friday night (Sept. 12) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Despite being outshot 22-13 and navigating 12 corner kicks, Homan anchored the U-M defensive unit to help keep Ohio State without a goal for just the second time this season in both squads' Big Ten opener.
The streaking Buckeyes (4-1-2, 0-0-1 Big Ten), who outscored their last four opponents 10-1, were stifled by Michigan (3-4-1, 0-0-1 Big Ten), which saw 90-minute outings from defenders Ellie Fife and Campbell Jewell.
U-M also secured physical minutes from Lilley Bosley, Vickie Jones, Stella Tapia and Aniyah League on the backline, who combined to give Homan her third clean sheet of the season and her second in as many games.
The Wolverines had all the answers in the first half, frustrating a Buckeyes offense that was limited to just two shots on goal, both from well outside the box.
Homan was active early, making her first save on an Ohio State screamer just 43 seconds in, but the U-M defense settled in from there to help counter the offense that struggled through the first 40 minutes.
However, in the final five minutes before the half, Michigan took it to Ohio State with three dangerous chances courtesy of Elle Ervin and Ella Jablinskey, who's 41st-minute shot led to an Adi Walick corner kick late in the first half.
Homan set the tone coming out of the locker room, denying the Buckeyes on the doorstep with three consecutive saves. On offense, Jenna Lang fired a rocket in the 55th minute from 15 yards out for Michigan's first dangerous chance of the second half.
Ervin and Kali Burrell executed a textbook counterattack that led to Burrell putting U-M's first shot on goal four minutes later, one of four second-half shots on target for the Wolverines.
With the Buckeyes pressing for the game-winner in the final two minutes, Homan stood tall yet again, making two crucial saves. Ohio State hit the top woodwork with 40 seconds left to help Michigan steal a league point on the road.
The Wolverines return to U-M Soccer Stadium for a two-game homestand starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday (Sept. 18) for a Blue Out against USC. The matchup will be streamed live on B1G+.
