
U-M Caps Off Michigan Invitational with Four-Set Win over Southern Indiana

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team took down Southern Indiana in four sets (25-11, 25-16, 21-25, 25-14) on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 7) at Crisler Center in the concluding match of the Michigan Invitational.
Michigan (6-0) was led by Morgan Burke, who tallied 27 assists, leading the offense -- and who doubled her career high in aces, recording six in the match. She also added 10 digs along with Ella Demetrician, who tallied 13 kills on 22 swings. Maddi Cuchran led the Wolverines with 12 digs in the match, while Allison Jacobs led U-M in kills with 19. Â
After dominating the first two sets -- hitting .471 and .429 respectively -- the Wolverines dropped the third before recovering and winning the match in the fourth set. In the final set, Jacobs opened with a kill, but Southern Indiana (1-6) took a lead at 3-2. Michigan went on a 7-0 run to go up, 9-4, and controlled the rest of the match. On the run, Jacobs tallied two kills and two solo blocks with Demetrician, and Lydia Johnson added a kill as well. The teams traded the next few points, but the Wolverines went on another run -- this time a 5-0 run -- led by two kills from Jenna Hanes. U-M got another run from Burke at the service line -- she tallied three aces in five serves at the line to put the Wolverines up, 21-9. The Wolverines finished off the match with a kill from Jacobs to win, 25-14, and hit .452 in the set.
The Maize and Blue opened on a 6-0 run, led by Demetrician, who tallied a kill and an ace. The Screaming Eagles ended the run after a U-M service error, but the Wolverines kept the pressure on and went up 10-1 with Johnson tallying two block assists, and Cuchran recording an ace. USI strung together a few points, but Michigan went on a 5-0 run to take a 16-4 lead with Jacobs tallying an ace and kill. The Wolverines continued to work and kept USI from coming back with Serena Nyambio finishing off the set, 25-11, with a commanding kill.Â
In the second set, USI got the first point of the set, and the set saw seven tied scores until the Wolverines strung together two points at 8-8. A kill from Demetrician put the Wolverines up, 9-8, before a Screaming Eagles' attack error gave Michigan a two-point lead, which it did not relinquish for the rest of the set. USI brought the match to one at 12-11, but a 5-0 Wolverines' run kept Michigan in front. On the run, Johnson and Jacobs both tallied two kills. The teams traded the next few points, but Michigan ended the set on another 5-0 run, which included Jacyn Bamis' first kill as a Wolverine and two aces from Burke. A kill from Demetrician ended the set, 25-16.
The Screaming Eagles took the first two points of the third set and got out to an 8-4 lead. A 5-0 run from Michigan tied the match at 10, with Jacobs recording two kills and Burke recording an ace. Michigan tied the set once more at 12 after a kill from Johnson, but USI took the next three points and did not trail for the rest of the set. The Eagles built their lead up to seven points, leading 21-14, before a failed U-M comeback saw the set end, 25-21.
The Wolverines will return to action on the road against Virginia on Friday (Sept. 12) at 6 p.m.Â
