COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team scored a pair of top-10 match wins but was undone by early bonus points in a 26-16 loss at No. 2 Ohio State on Sunday (Feb. 1) at the Covelli Center. It marked the Wolverines' first dual loss in Big Ten Conference action this season.
Redshirt freshman Brock Mantanona and graduate student Taye Ghadiali both scored walk-off takedowns, Mantanona in the final seconds of regulation and Ghadiali in overtime, to secure upsets at 184 pounds and heavyweight, respectively. The teams split four ranked matchups evenly to close out the dual.
Mantanona, ranked ninth nationally by InterMat, came out on top of a scramble on the edge of the mat to defeat seventh-ranked Dylan Fishback, 4-1. After several shot attempts from both wrestlers but no scoring through the first two periods, Mantanona avoided a deep single-leg late and ran behind for the winning takedown with just four seconds remaining in regulation. It was Mantanona's sixth ranked win of the season and his second over a top-10 opponent.
Ghadiali, ranked seventh at heavyweight, earned his third career win over Ohio State's third-ranked Nick Feldman, 4-1, with a scramble takedown approximately 30 seconds into the sudden-victory frame. Neither wrestler generated much offense during regulation, and Feldman snapped and ran behind to a single leg early in overtime. Ghadiali recovered his leg, stayed with the action on the edge, and finished the takedown through a roll. He improved to a team-best 16-2 on the season, earning his seventh ranked victory.
Bonus points proved decisive in the opening half, factoring into all five bouts before intermission. Michigan dropped the first three matches to fall behind 16-0 early but responded with a major decision and a first-period pin to cut the halftime deficit to six.
Graduate student Lachlan McNeil, ranked 13th at 149 pounds, got the Wolverines on the board with a 13-3 major decision over Brogan Fielding. McNeil scored two takedowns apiece in the first and second periods, the latter coming after a lengthy delay due to a malfunctioning score clock. He added a pair of stall points and accumulated 1:22 in riding-time advantage to improve to 4-0 in Big Ten dual competition.
Redshirt freshman Cameron Catrabone, ranked 14th at 157 pounds, wasted little time securing his team-best sixth pin of the season, sticking Landon Desselle in just 1:36. Catrabone finished a single leg after a brief scramble and went to work on top with an arm bar, turning Desselle with a half to end the bout early. He has earned bonus points in six of his last seven matches, with all of his pins coming in the first period.
The Wolverines (8-3, 4-1 Big Ten) will close out the home portion of their 2025-26 schedule next Friday (Jan. 6), hosting No. 1 Penn State at 6 p.m. at Crisler Center. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office, and the dual will be streamed live on the Big Ten Network.
