Michigan alumnus Evan Bates and his partner Madison Chock stand in second place after rhythm dance, earning 89.72 points for their Lenny Kravitz-inspired rock-and-roll routine -- less than half of point behind France's Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron with 90.18. The duo received a slight technical deduction on a pattern step.
The ice dancing competition began less than 24 hours after Chock and Bates claimed team gold medals for the second straight Olympic Games, but the duo is still looking for its first Olympic medal in pairs competition after finishing fourth in Beijing in 2022.
The rhythm dance scores carry over to Wednesday's free dance and will be combined to determine medal winners. Since the scores carry over from the rhythm dance instead of the placement, the American and French skating pairs are virtually tied in what is expected to be a two-way battle for the gold medal.

Michigan alumnus Evan Bates and his partner Madison Chock closed out the free dance portion of the team event at Milano Ice Skating Arena with a season-high 133.23 points -- their second season high in as many days -- and a first-place finish to net 10 points for Team USA. Taking the ice to an orchestral rendition of the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black," the three-time and reigning World champions earned Level 4s on four elements, including a curve-curve combination lift that tallied 14.74 points, which was the highest-scoring element of the competition.
Team USA also earned a runner-up effort from Ilia Malinin in the men's short program to maintain first place in the team race with 44 points. Japan (39), Italy (37), Canada (35) and Georgia (32) round out the top-five leaders. The team event concludes on Sunday with the pairs, women's and men's free skates.
