LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Michigan softball team put the go-ahead run at the plate in the seventh inning, but could not complete its comeback, falling 5-2 to No. 10 Nebraska in its Big Ten Conference opener on Friday evening (March 13) at the Huskers' Bowlin Stadium.
The Cornhuskers (19-5, 1-0 Big Ten) led from wire to wire after scoring two runs apiece in the first and second innings, but Michigan got its offense going late, plating two in the sixth before loading the bases with no outs against Nebraska ace Jordy Frahm in the seventh. However, U-M was unable to capitalize as Frahm (nee Bahl), the 2025 NFCA DI Player of the Year, closed out the game with a low lineout and back-to-back strikeouts to strand all three Wolverines.
Nebraska led off the first inning with three singles and added another run on a double steal to strike quickly and knocked out a two-run homer to extend its lead in the second. But sophomore right-handed pitchers Kat Meyers and Haley Ferguson, who entered with two outs in the fourth, allowed no hits and just two baserunners to settle in through the middle three innings.
Michigan broke through in its third turn through the lineup in the sixth. Senior designated player Indiana Langford drew a leadoff walk, advanced on a wild pitch and scored when junior center fielder Jenissa Conway laced a triple over the head of Frahm at first base and into the corner down the right-field line for her sixth three-bagger of the season. Conway then scored on a fielder's choice to first base, sliding in just before the tag at the plate -- a call that she earned on review after initially being called out.
Nebraska got a run back with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, then moved Frahm to the circle for the seventh. The Wolverines loaded the bases on a leadoff walk, a throwing error and senior second baseman Janelle Ilacqua's hard infield single off Frahm's shin to flip the order. Ilacqua led U-M with two hits. Michigan stranded seven total baserunners in the contest.
Meyers (5-3) allowed four runs -- just two earned -- on six hits and a walk over 3.2 innings in the losing effort, while Ferguson gave up one run on two hits and a walk in 2.1 relief innings.
The Wolverines (19-7, 0-1 Big Ten) will close out their three-game series at Nebraska with a 1 p.m. CT doubleheader on Saturday (March 14) at Bowlin Stadium. Both games will be streamed live on B1G+.
