ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team swept all six singles matches to earn a 6-1 victory over Northwestern Sunday (April 25) in Brian Eisner's final regular-season head coaching appearance. The win upped No. 30 Michigan's mark to 16-3 on the season and 9-1 in the Big Ten Conference. Northwestern, ranked No. 39 in the nation, fell to 9-11 overall and 4-6 in the conference.
In his 30 years at Michigan, Eisner's teams compiled a 449-199 record, with a 263-63 mark in Big Ten play. Eisner, who is retiring at the end of the season, has led the Wolverines to 18 Big Ten titles. Including his six seasons at Toledo, Eisner's teams have accumulated a 525-229-1 record.
William Farah (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) led Michigan's singles assault, winning 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. The win improved the senior's record to 20-11 overall, marking the fourth consecutive season he has won at least 20 matches. Farah's 97-52 career mark has him just three victories shy of becoming the sixth Wolverine to collect 100 career singles wins.
Freshman Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) continued his impressive season with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles. Cox leads the team in overall (25), dual match (18) and regional (17) victories. He is tied with John Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS), a 6-4, 6-2 victor at No. 3 singles, with nine wins during the Big Ten season.
At No. 6 singles, junior Ron Nano (Great Neck, N.Y./South HS) earned his first dual-match victory as a Wolverine. Nano's 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 decision marked his fourth overall win of the season.
Michigan will host the Big Ten Championship Thursday through Sunday (April 29-May 2) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines are the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will play Friday at 9 a.m. against the winner of Thursday's Northwestern (No. 7) vs. Penn State (No. 10) matchup.
