CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The University of Michigan wrestling team closed out its 2026 NCAA Championships with a near-perfect fifth session on Saturday morning (March 21) as all five Wolverine All-Americans won their medal matches in front of 17,621 fans at Rocket Arena. U-M claimed seventh place (66Â points) in the final team standings; the program has finished in the top 10 in nine of the last 10 tournaments.
The Wolverines posted a stellar 7-1 record during the morning session, scoring three bonus wins and 18 points to climb two spots in team standings -- though Stanford jumped U-M by 1.5 points with an upset win in the finals. All five Wolverine All-Americans wrestled to or above their NCAA seed.
Graduate students Lachlan McNeil and Taye Ghadiali bounced back from their semifinal losses with back-to-back consolation wins to claim third at 149 pounds and heavyweight, respectively. It was the best NCAA finish for both multi-time All-Americans in their final appearances.
McNeil, seeded 11th, closed out the tournament with a 10-5 comeback win over Nebraska's 20th-seeded Chance Lamer in the medal round, putting the Husker on his back out of a third-period scramble for the go-ahead takedown and four near-fall points. He also picked up a 6-3 decision in the consolation semifinals against Iowa's 15th-seeded Ryder Block on a first-period single leg -- his second win over Block this season.
McNeil completed his collegiate career as a four-time All-American, placing third (2026), fifth (2025), sixth (2024) and fourth (2023) at 141 and 149 pounds. He compiled a 104-32 career record, including a 22-7 mark this season at Michigan.
Ghadiali, seeded third at heavyweight, was workmanlike en route to a pair of decision wrestleback wins, including a 5-1 victory against Oklahoma State's seventh-seeded Konner Doucet in his third-place bout after scoring on a late first-period single leg and accumulating 1:04 in riding-time advantage. His 5-0 consolation semifinal win against Iowa's eighth-seeded Ben Kueter looked similar as Ghadiali finished from rear standing at the first-period buzzer and rode for 1:50.
Ghadiali posted a team-best 28-3 record this season with 17 bonus wins, including three this weekend. He went 131-31 over his collegiate career and was a two-time All-American after previously taking eighth place at the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
Redshirt freshman Brock Mantanona, seeded fifth at 184 pounds, split his consolation bouts to claim fifth place in his NCAA Championships debut, falling 11-3 to Missouri's second-seeded Aeoden Sinclair in the consolation semifinals before earning a forfeit win in his medal match.
Redshirt freshman Cameron Catrabone, seeded 15th at 157 pounds, also took a forfeit in his medal match to claim seventh place in his NCAA debut, while redshirt sophomore Beau Mantanona scored big points with a first-period pin against Iowa State's 11th-seeded MJ Gaitan in the seventh-place bout at 174 pounds. Mantanona, seeded ninth, scored two early takedowns and gave up one but quickly reversed Gaitan to his back for the fall at the buzzer (2:59). It was his sixth pin this season and second against Gaitan.
With five All-Americans, Michigan tied for the fifth most at the 2026 NCAA Championships, and it is the program's most since boasting six in 2022. The Wolverines now claim 219 All-America citations in program history, while Sean Bormet has coached 27 since taking over as head coach in 2019.
The Mantanonas are the fourth brother duo to earn All-America honors at Michigan, along with Blair and Earl Thomas, Harold and Don Nichols and Ryan and Josh Churella. Catrabone and his father, three-time All-American Jeff Catrabone (1995-98), become Michigan's fifth father-son duo to earn All-America honors, joining Jesse Rawls Sr. and Jr., Dan and Matt Brink, Mark and Ryan and Josh Churella and Mike and Myles Amine.
