HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Junior right-handed pitcher Erin Hoehn tossed a complete-game shutout and helped her cause with a two-run homer to lead the University of Michigan softball team to an 8-0, five-inning win at James Madison on Wednesday afternoon (March 4) at the Dukes' Bank of the James Field at Veterans Memorial Park. It was the Wolverines' second straight midweek win by the same margin and U-M's seventh shutout win this season.
Hoehn (3-2) struck out three batters and scattered four hits with no walks. James Madison put two runners in scoring position over five innings and reached third base with two outs in the second inning, but Hoehn fanned the next batter to strand the Dukes' best opportunity of the game.
Michigan scored in all but one inning of the abbreviated contest. Senior designated player Indiana Langford and junior center fielder Jenissa Conway set the table to manufacture U-M's first two runs, scoring on a groundout in the first and a sacrifice fly in the third before the Wolverines transitioned to the long ball for the remainder of their runs.
Hoehn homered to left field for two runs with two outs in the third for her second home run in the last four games.
Sophomore right fielder Lauren Putz blasted her second three-run homer in as many days with an opposite-field shot to left-center in the fourth inning. Putz ranks among the nation's home run leaders with 12. She is already just two shy homers of her 2025 total.
Junior left fielder Ella Stephenson pushed the game into run-rule territory with a two-out solo shot -- her fifth home run this season -- to left field in the top of the fifth. Stephenson and Conway posted two hits apiece in the game, while Putz tallied four RBI and Langford scored three runs to lead the Wolverine offense.
The Wolverines (17-5) will wrap their spring break trip with a three-game appearance at the Hokie Invitational in Salem, Va. Michigan will face Boston College at 4 p.m. and No. 11 Virginia Tech at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday (March 5) and Bryant at 10 a.m. on Friday (March 6). All games will be played at the James Moyer Softball Complex.
